Silver foliage, scent and warm gravel. An olive or bay as the centrepiece, with lavender, rosemary and euphorbia around it, finished in buff gravel. It loves sun, copes with dry spells and needs very little watering once settled.
Key plants: Olive, lavender, euphorbia, rosemary, Stipa tenuissima
Best for: Sunny front gardens, patios and south-facing beds
Calm, layered and green all year. A Japanese maple as the focal point, with a dwarf pine, ferns and soft grasses, set off with stone and gravel. Quiet colour that changes through the seasons rather than a riot of flowers.
Key plants: Acer palmatum, Pinus mugo, Polystichum and Dryopteris ferns, Hakonechloa
Best for: Shady corners, courtyards and small gardens
Loose, airy and full of movement, inspired by North American meadows. Tall see-through perennials weave through ornamental grasses for colour from early summer well into winter, and the bees love it.
Key plants: Verbena bonariensis, salvia, Miscanthus, echinacea, rudbeckia
Best for: Open, sunny borders and wildlife-friendly gardens
Big leaves and bold shapes for a tropical feel that still copes with a London winter. Hardy palms, tree ferns and Fatsia make the framework, with ferns and grasses filling in underneath.
Key plants: Trachycarpus fortunei, Dicksonia antarctica, Fatsia japonica, ferns
Best for: Sheltered gardens and shady side returns
Strappy leaves and bright summer flowers from the southern hemisphere, tough enough for our winters. Agapanthus and red hot pokers bring the colour, with pittosporum and phormium for evergreen structure.
Key plants: Agapanthus, Kniphofia, Pittosporum, Phormium, Hebe
Best for: Sunny borders and low-maintenance gardens
